A friend is the youngest daughter of a family of five daughters and she watched her older sisters carefully. She saw her sisters fall in-and-out of love, get good grades and bad, and observed the not-at-all subtle manifestations of puberty. “Two my sisters, “she recalls, hadn’t planned on going to prom, and then decided at the last minute to go. There was a huge scramble to prep for it.” The most troublesome element, she recalls, were the acquisition of prom dresses. “Of course, our older sisters offered their dresses, but that was so not going to happen,” she explains. “Our oldest had re-purposed it for a Halloween costume and the other sister is a completely different size.”
